Today is the first of the Friday home tours this spring! It’s always thought provoking and inspiring to see how someone else designs, decorates and styles their home. I love the little tidbits of each homeowner’s personality; mentions of a favorite vintage finds, motifs with special meaning and the ways they’ve shaped their home to make sense for the whole family.
Doreen Corrigan is a home decor and lifestyle blogger, and twin mama located in the suburbs of Chicago. She is also my new easy DIY queen (cute, quick and classy DIYs). Here is Doreen’s tour in her own words. I think you’ll love her light, bright and elegant home. And don’t miss a new tour each week for the next five Fridays! DOREEN CORRIGAN – #SpringIntoHome Tour
We purchased our home over three years ago and fell in love the first time we walked in. The wraparound front porch and open floor plan immediately greeted our family and we knew it was “the one.” As with love, when you know you just know. But the process of moving in is ongoing; we’re still working on the upstairs and I’m looking forward to redoing the kitchen someday – slowly but surely we’re putting our touch on each room of the house.
The open floor plan and grand staircase were so welcoming that first time we entered the house. We’ve made several updates along the way including staining the floors and front door, painting the staircase and adding a runner, a fresh coat of paint throughout, wainscoting, and changing out all the light fixtures.
The playroom used to be an office that we converted. We have an office upstairs off our master bedroom, and it has worked really nicely to have the playroom more central downstairs. The vintage pineapple tole chandelier is an Ebay find that I painted. Adding a chalkboard wall makes the perfect focal-point for any picture day or rainy day art project.
I like to bring the outdoors in, so I decorate with organic pieces a lot. This Spring I’ve done a refresh and lightened up in terms of color (I love blush, soft blues, and white), and then I bring in texture through baskets, rugs, and pillows.
The family room needed a lot of TLC; we dry-walled the floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace and added custom built-ins. We spend the vast majority of our time as a family in the family room, so we’ve enjoyed every minute of these updates. Our living room got a fresh coat of paint and with a few simple coastal casual upgrades, it’s my favorite room to escape and relax when I can.
If you weren’t already aware, I have something of an affinity for (or obsession with) pineapples. Definitely an influence from my mother as pineapple wallpaper adored our dining room walls growing up. They symbolize hospitality and make multiple appearances in our home, but my favorite is the pineapple wallpaper in our laundry room – it livens things up a bit and makes chores feel more cheery.
My philosophy of home is to surround yourself with things you love because it will truly embody your family and tell your story. I believe home and decor should be affordable and accessible to all. Thanks for joining our home tour – I’m so excited to be part of it and to share part of our home with you. And I’m really excited to see what these other ladies are sharing in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
XO, Doreen
